Fanlights were very popular in Georgian architecture, helping to let light into tall dark hallways from a window above the front door. Although simple fanlights were just a semicircular shape with radiating glazing bars (hence their name) some were rectangular and both shapes gave opportunities for a wide variety of patterns.
