Prior Ernulf’s (western) crypt included the Eastern Chapels of Holy Innocents (to the north) and St Gabriel (to the south), Both were richly decorated with carvings on pillars and arcades and paintings on the walls and vaulting. The carvings on the capitals of the columns in the Chapel of Holy Innocents are spectacular. The Western of the two columns has dragons on two sides and floral designs on the other two, all carved by axe. In the 15th Century the apse was replaced with a square window.
