Period & Description
1800 to 1830 (NB this is much wider than the strict historical period of 1811 to 1820 when the son of George III acted as Regent)
Features
The Regency style was instigated by John Nash, who designed the Regency terraces of Regent’s Park (founded 1814) and Regent Street (completed 1825). It followed on from Georgian architecture. Many other English cities, including Canterbury, produced their own examples.
The period coincides with similar trends in other parts of the world: the Biedermeier style in German-speaking lands, Federal style in the United States and also the French Empire style. The first 3 images show examples of Regency features and the other 3 images show examples of Regency buildings.
