Description
This can be anything from a builder’s mark or initials, with or without a date, through company names to brightly painted advertisements covering large parts of a wall. These latter have often been preserved behind an advertising hoarding but once exposed they fade and weather, eventually leaving an unreadable sort of brick “palimpsest”. Several Canterbury buildings have wall writing. Some are obviously commercial signs from the past; some are fading earlier street names; others seem to show the initials of earlier owners; some are dated and others not; for some we can guess the meanings whilst others are complete mysteries.
