A chapter house is a building or room that forms part of a cathedral or monastery and is used for larger meetings.

The name arose from the Book of Benedict which was written in a series of short chapters – the daily business meeting in Benedictine monasteries started with the reading of one of these chapters.

Canterbury can claim the largest medieval Chapter House in England, although possibly not the most striking as some elsewhere are built in the shape of a polygon or are circular.
