Dickens (Postcards)

A large part of the semi autobiographical novel, David Copperfield, is set in Canterbury, and many owners and proprietors have claimed that their own particular building is featured in this book. Charles Dickens himself was said to be very vague when asked about specific buildings and their links to his novel. For the merits or otherwise of the claims made on behalf of various Canterbury buildings please see our main page on Charles Dickens or another helpful article by Professor Carolyn Oulton. Whatever the truth of the alleged connection we hope you enjoy browsing through the images below. The first six cards (pre WW1) are from the Rotary Photographic series. More than one building is said to be the home of Uriah Heap. The last two images are from a Charles Dickens festival held in 1933.
