On the north side of Green Court, near the Deanery, lies an entry known as Forrens Gate (Image 1). In days of the Priory, this stood beside the monastic bakehouse and granary – now a row of much restored flint buildings.
On the wall inside the Forrens Gate we find a pair of massive fire hooks (Images 2 and 3) used to drag flaming thatch from roofs which had caught fire. They are constructed with metal fittings and chains on wooden poles, and must have taken several men to manoeuvre each of them.
