Description
A mansard roof has two angles of slope – the steep section below the more shallow section. This may apply to one, two, or more sides of the roof. The term has also been applied to a flat top roof with four sloping sides (last example below).
Many local examples are not easy to see, particularly where a steep parapet obscures the details of the roof behind.
Named after the French classical architect Francois Mansart (1598-1666). Also known as a Gambrel roof (the US term).
