Musicians’ Window

This window was made in 1934 by Hugh Easton (1906-1965).  It can be seen in the west walk of the cloisters, and depicts four English musicians: Purcell, Tallis, Merbecke and Archbishop Stephen Langton (Image 1).  This window was supposed to be the start of a series of stained glass windows that would have filled all the tracery around the Cloister; this never materialised.  Easton’s best known work is the Royal Air Force window in Westminster Abbey.

What to see:

  • image of Henry Purcell (1659-1695) one of the greatest English composers (Image 2)
  • image of Archbishop Stephen Langton (with mitre) who is buried in the Holland Chapel, and is thought to have composed the hymn ‘Veni, Sancte, Spiritus’ or Come Holy Spirit (Image 3)
