Description
Also known as ribbed vault. This is a development from the groin vault. Here, ribs of cut stone form a framework, so that lighter material can be used to fill the ‘cells’ in between. The earliest simple rib vaults appeared in the 12th century. Developments during the following 400 years include tierceron, lierne, and fan vaults. See Vault Index for further details.
