Archibald Tait (1811-1882) served as Archbishop of Canterbury between 1868 and his death. As he was buried in Addington, the Canterbury memorial is strictly a cenotaph.
What to see:
- a delicate effigy of alabaster set upon a marble tomb – the life-like, long haired Tait is wearing a rochet (tunic) and chimere (academic gown)
- the splendidly draped bishop’s sleeves
- the coloured marble in the tomb and plinth
